Trichotillomania – What it is, Causes, Symptoms and Treatments  we should all know. Moreover,  trichotillomania is the urgent and irrepressible urge to pull one’s own hair or hair , whether from the scalp , eyebrows or other body parts. It is a type of compulsive disorder, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

The person knows what you’re doing is not right, but can not control and continues pulling and pulling wires hair . In some people Trichotillomania is simple and can be controlled. Others have such a strong impulse that they get hairless regions and need to hide the problem.

What is Trichotillomania:

It is an impulse control disorder that presents itself as a strong desire to pull or twist your own hair. The hair  may be of various parts of your body, including the scalp , face, arms, legs, eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic areas.

More women than men are affected by this disorder. the  Tricotilomanias  is considered to be part of a family of “repetitive behaviors focused on the body.”

Causes of Trichotillomania:

The cause of trichotillomania  is essentially unknown. It is thought to be a neuro-biological disease that may have a genetic or environmental connection. People with trichotillomania  are thought to pull their hair  as a coping mechanism for stress .

Trichotillomania Symptoms:

Among the symptoms of trichotillomanias , the most common are:

  • Repeatedly pulling strands of scalp , eyebrows or eyelashes, among other areas of the body;
  • Feeling an increase in tension before pulling hair or trying to resist the urge to pull;
  • Feel pleasure or relief when pulling a hair ;
  • Areas with less hair or no hair at all;
  • Have preference for specific hair or rituals when pulling hair;
  • Chew, bite, swallow or coil torn wires.

It is common for people with trichotillomania to also engage in other compulsive behaviors such as biting their nails , chewing their lips or even hurting their own skin. In addition, many patients with trichotillomanias tend to hide hair , eyelash and eyebrow flaws and pull hair only when they are alone.

Treatment For Trichotillomania:

The main treatment for trichotillomania is a type of behavioral therapy called habit reversal (thr) training. Basically, this means replacing a bad habit with something that is not harmful.

With this approach, people with trichotillomania first learn to identify when and where they feel like pulling hair . They also learn to relax and do something else that won’t hurt them as a way to help ease tension when they feel like pulling their hair.

It can be as simple as making a fist with the hand you would use to pull your hair . Therapy can also treat useless thoughts that could be added to the stress that triggers the behavior.
