Pemphigus – What it is, Causes, Symptoms and TreatmentsThe Pemphigus foliaceus affects the skin and tends to be more itchy than painful. The Pemphigus can occur at any age, but is most often seen in middle-aged or older people.

The Pemphigus should not be confused with bullous pemphigoid, another condition skin . Pemphigus is usually better controlled by early diagnosis and treatment. Treatment may include medicines and therapies similar to those used for severe burns .

Causes of Pemphigus:

The Pemphigus is an autoimmune disease. The immune system usually makes antibodies to attack bacteria, viruses and other germs. In people with autoimmune diseases, the immune system also produces antibodies against a part of the body .

In individuals with PV, the antibodies are made against a protein that binds skin cells together.

As a result, the binding between many skin cells is broken and this causes the cells to separate from each other. The fluid builds up between the separate cells and forms bubbles.

Symptoms of Pemphigus:

There are two main types of this condition. What symptoms you will get depends on the type you have.

Common Pemphigus: As we mentioned above, this is the most common form. It is noteworthy that this condition affects the moist parts of your body , such as your mouth and genitals.

Adults between the ages of 30 and 60 are more likely to get it.

Then the blisters usually form on your skin or inside your genitals. They hurt, but they do not itch.

Pemphigus Foliaceus: These are raw blisters that tend to form on your chest, shoulders and back. They do not hurt, but they bring itching .

Treatments for Pemphigus:

Treatment for Pemphigus is usually done with the use of medications prescribed by the dermatologist, such as:

Prednisone or Hydrocortisone: These medicines are used in milder cases of Pemphigus  to relieve symptoms. They should not be used for more than 1 week in a row;

Azathioprine or Mycophenolate: These decrease the action of the immune system by blocking the attack on healthy cells. However, by reducing the function of the immune system, there is a greater chance of infection and, therefore, these drugs are used in the most severe cases;

Antibiotics, antivirals or antifungals: these are used when there is some type of infection in the wounds left by the blisters .

The treatment is done at home and may go on for a few months or years, depending on the individual’s body and the type and severity of Pemphigus , and during the treatment, regular consultations should be made to the specialist to be sure that the disease is being controlled.
