What is hypokalemia?

Hypokalemia  is the name given to the low amount of potassium  present in the bloodstream. The potassium  is an electrolyte essential for proper functioning of nerve cells and muscles, especially the heart muscle cells.

Causes of Hypokalemia:

The Hypokalemia  occurs when the body loses too potassium body. This usually occurs in urine, sweat or feces. The use of diuretics is a major cause of the problem. In addition, others are the factors that cause hypokalemia :

Use of antibiotics and / or laxatives;

Vomiting ;

Diarrhea ;

Dehydration ;

Sweating;

Use of diuretics;

Excess sugar;

Magnesium deficiency;

Diabetic ketoacidosis;

Chronic kidney disease .

Hypokalemia Symptoms:

Generally, a small drop in the amount of potassium in the bloodstream shows no symptoms. However, when this drop is too great, it can even put one’s life at risk. Major symptoms of hypokalemia  include:

Abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmias), especially in people with heart disease;

Fatigue ;

Paralysis (which may include the lungs);

Constipation;

Weakness or muscle spasms;

Muscle injury (rhabdomyolysis).

Treatment For Hypokalemia:

When the case of hypokalemia  is simple, it can only be treated with potassium supplements in tablets, capsules or liquid. If the case is severe, potassium may be injected into the vein to reach the bloodstream more quickly.

In cases where medication ingestion is not required, simply cutting or changing diuretic medications may be sufficient to remedy the problem, however, the doctor must prescribe the doses and prescriptions.
