Filariosis – What it is, Causes, Symptoms and Treatments you need to know. In addition, Filariasis , also popular for lymphatic filariasis (LF), is more normal in tropical countries and is caused by parasitic nematode worms that look like small wires.

The Filariasis lymphatic existed for many years. Reports of the disease were reported in ancient Greek literature, and its symptoms were first shown in the 16th century, during early explorations of Goa, Africa, and Asia.

Causes of Filariasis:

The main cause of Filariasis is a parasite known as Wuchereria bancrofti and occurs only in the human species. It has as transmitters of the disease the females of the species Culex, Anopheles, Aedes or Mansonia species, typical hosts of hot and humid climate.

Symptoms of filariasis:

The main symptoms of Filariasis in their early stages are:

Goosebumps;

Fever ;

Headache .

These symptoms are seen in the later stage:

Swelling , redness, and pain in the arms and legs;

Blockage in the lymphatic system leading to edema;

Accumulation of pus in cells;

The formation of pus in a cell due to dying worms or a secondary bacterial infection results in:

Abdominal pain;

Rashes ;

Damage to the cornea, choroid, retina and optic nerve, ultimately resulting in loss of vision ;

Hyper or hypopigmented skin on the face, arms, feet and other parts of the body ;

If these symptoms are neglected, the final stage of this disease would result in a gross increase of the limbs and genitals in a condition called elephantiasis .

Treatment for Filariasis:

People with Filariasis are treated through hygienic-dietary guidelines and anti-parasitic drugs, such as diethylcarbamazine.

In specific cases where the drug treatment is not efficient, a surgical intervention is necessary.
