Although Double Vision (also called diplopia ) may be temporary, you should still visit an ophthalmologist to find out what is going on.

In short… Double Vision is the perception of two images of a single object seen adjacent to each other (horizontal, vertical or oblique) or overlap.

Diplopia is the medical term for Double Vision. Polyplopia is the perception of three or more overlapping images of a single object.

Causes of Double Vision:

Each eye creates its own image of the environment. These two representations are combined by the brain so that they are perceived as a clear image.

If damage occurs to the muscles that move the eyes or the nerves that control the movement, a double image can be created.

Both eyes must work together to create depth of field. Alternatively, the eye- moving muscles may become weakened by certain diseases and produce Double Vision.

Double Vision Treatments:

If you suffer from Double Vision, your treatment will depend entirely on the type and cause of your diplopia. Treatment can be as simple as wearing an eye patch, glasses or special contacts.

Botox injections or eyelid surgery can be used to correct a double vision strabismus .

Similarly, a cataract operation may be necessary if a cataract is the cause, or dry eye treatment may help if dry eye is the cause.
