Deafness – What is, Causes, Symptoms and Treatments of this disorder. In addition, deafness , also called hearing impairment, can be congenital or acquired. In congenital deafness  the child acquires disability during pregnancy . Acquisition of deafness  by the baby may be due to drugs taken by the pregnant woman, diseases acquired during pregnancy , such as syphilis and toxoplasmosis, or due to hereditary causes.

Mother’s exposure to radiation and birth problems can also cause this condition in the child. The fact that the child is born before or after time, hospital infections , the use of forceps to remove the child, or lack of oxygenation can lead to deafness .

What is deafness?

This condition is characterized by sudden hearing loss that can affect one or both ears . Technically, a case of sudden hearing loss is considered sudden deafness  when it is greater than 30 dB (decibels) at three continuous frequencies and occurs over a period of less than three days.

It is estimated that in 70% of cases it is accompanied by tinnitus and 30% by dizziness. Usually it is unilateral, with similar incidence for both men and women and higher prevalence in patients aged 40 to 60 years.

Causes of Deafness:

The Deafness  can be genetic or acquired. There are numerous causes that can impair hearing. Some are transient and easy to resolve, such as ear canal wax accumulation with the feeling of ear plugging and malaise that is among the main causes of the transient condition.

Another cause of this condition is otitis, which in most cases can be treated with antibiotics, and resolution is total.

In some situations, otitis can cause permanent structural changes (destruction of the eardrum) where treatment already involves surgery and the prospect of rehabilitation of hearing capacity is lower.

Deafness Symptoms:

The symptoms are quite variable. Some patients with sudden deafness  reported hearing an explosive sound in the  affected ear when the injury first occurred. In these cases the sudden condition was accompanied by persistent tinnitus and vertigo that usually subsides within a few days.

But in general, the sudden condition is a clear perception of decreased hearing, ringing and dizziness , and a feeling of pressure in the ears , as if the ear  is clogged or plugged.

Deafness Treatments:

Treatment for deafness  depends on its cause, such as cleaning or draining the ear  when there is accumulation of wax or discharge, or performing surgery in cases of perforated eardrum or to correct any deformity, for example.

However, hearing recovery may require the use of hearing aids or electronic device implants. Learn more when hearing aid is required and major types. After indicating the hearing aid, the audiologist will be the professional responsible for guiding the use, the type of hearing aid, and adapting and monitoring the hearing aid for the user.

In addition, some patients may also benefit from some forms of rehabilitation that include lip reading or sign language, which improve their quality of communication and social interaction.
